The Wesleyan Methodist Society was formed in Irchester in about 1775 in a barn at the Manor House. The Manor House at that time was the home to Dr. Thomas Angrave and once John Wesley, the Methodist founder called in on him for tea on his way to Bedford. In 1788 the Society erected a chapel in what was to become Chapel Yard. They were located in this building until 1869. The old Chapel was turned into three houses and the whole yard was demolished in about 1960. A development of bungalows in Chapel Hill now stands on the site. The present chapel as seen in this picture had its foundation stone laid on the 3rd August 1869. The Chapel opened for worship in 1870. An organ was bought from Tichmarsh Church for £60. Galleries were added in 1883 followed by an extension to the school in 1899. Memorial stones can be seen on the wall lining the right of the building which commemorate this event
