IRCHESTER BOMBING |
In the early hours of the morning of the 20th, May 1941 a lone German Bomber Plane dropped five bombs on the village of Irchester. |
The first bomb in Farndish Road landed in the garden of No. 36 ( Mr. & Mrs. Charles & Frances Salisbury ) but did not explode. The second exploded at the junction of East St. And Farndish Rd., totally destroying 15 houses, the Primitive Methodist Chapel, and causing the death of 6 adults and 3 children. |
Such was the devastation it left a crater which was big enough to fit a Double Decker Bus into. |
The area has since been rebuilt and no one looking at Farndish Rd. Today would know about the bombing, except of course in the memories of those who experienced the night of the dreadful bombs. |
One bomb dropped on the Irchester Pits ( site of the Country Park ), another on land adjoining 23 Gypsy Lane, another on the motor garage in Wollaston Road and a further two on Farndish Road. |
